Culinary Arts Instructor (Spring 2011)
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
* Associates degree in culinary arts or related field or equivalent experience; bachelor’s degree preferred.
* Recent work experience, three years of which must be in direct preparation and service of food items in a restaurant, institutional, or catering environment.
* ACF chef level certification or equivalent credentials and is willing to attain certification.
* Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
* Effective organizational skills, particularly as they relate to the teaching-learning process.
* Capable of creating a classroom and lab environment which is conducive to student learning.
Desirable Qualifications:
* An understanding of the community college philosophy and the community college student.
* Experience with alternative learning delivery methods and systems.
* Commitment to cultural diversity among students, faculty, and in the curriculum.
* Experience in delivering computer-enhanced laboratory simulations.
* Computer experience in common software and Internet.
* Successful teaching experience.
Job Duties:
About the Position:
The instructor will be responsible for course instruction and classroom management in an ACF certified program. Duties include, but are not limited to, teaching classroom and laboratory sessions, curriculum development/restructuring, committee assignments, student academic advising, student recruitment and responsibility for materials and supplies. Also responsible for quality and quantity of applicable food items in accordance with H.A.C.C.P. and State of Iowa Department of Health regulations. Will work cooperatively with the Food Service manager to facilitate student lab experiences. All candidates interviewed will be required to provide a teaching demonstration.
Job Responsibilities:
1. Function as a team leader with other instructors to promote, develop, and deliver quality education programs that are in the best interest of the students and the college.
2. Organize and teach classes and the labs as assigned by the academic dean, meeting the contract minimum of on-campus hours per week.
3. Conduct class meetings for the entire period scheduled and in a punctual manner.
4. Contribute to the development of course competencies and assessments for the program.
5. Assist with the development and monitoring of the program budget.
6. Interview prospective students for the Culinary Arts Program.
7. Assist with the development and revision of program curricula.
8. Assist with the recruitment and retention of students to the program.
9. Initiate and pursue a professional growth plan; at a minimum, this plan must meet the guide lines for yearly in-service training.
10. Maintain competency and knowledge of current research, practice, and trends in the culinary arts and hospitality management field.
11. Advise students as assigned; refer students to other college resources as needed.
12. Actively participate in college life and activities, including participation in campus committees.
13. Maintain program equipment, making reports of repairs as needed to the department program chair and appropriate college departments.
14. Maintain student enrollment, attendance, competency records, grades and other pertinent class and student records.
15. Participate in departmental, school, and college meetings as scheduled.
16. Maintain up-to-date syllabi, using criteria established by the Dean, in all courses as assigned.
17. Exhibit a positive and professional demeanor and attitude, contributing to a productive and growth oriented work environment.
18. Schedule and conduct office hours weekly.
19. Serve as an advisor to student activity organizations as assigned.
20. Understand and adhere to the organization structure of the College and the academic division.
21. Maintain confidentiality regarding students and colleagues.
22. Demonstrate punctuality on all requests from the Dean, and Program Chair. This may include but is not limited to:
• Development of class schedules
• Budget development
• Evaluation of courses and programs
• Reports
• Committee assignments
• Equipment needs and evaluations
23. Undertake and proficiently complete additional duties as assigned.
